Scripture calls the prophet "Elijah the Tishbite" of Gilead (1 Kings 17:1), and tradition places his Tishbe on a wooded hill near Ajloun. The ruins of a large Byzantine church crown Tell Mar Elias; close by, the shrine of Our Lady of the Mountain at Anjara marks the cave where tradition says Jesus, Mary and the disciples rested.
