A town with a long-established Christian community, its churches and workshops famous for mosaics. In the Greek Orthodox Church of St George lies the Madaba Map, a sixth-century mosaic of the Holy Land and the oldest surviving map of the region — Jerusalem at its centre, the Jordan flowing into the Dead Sea, and the place of baptism marked beside the river.
