Ancient Gerasa was one of the ten cities of the Decapolis, the region the Gospel of Mark records Jesus passing through (Mark 7:31). Its colonnaded streets, Oval Plaza and theatres are among the best-preserved Roman remains anywhere, with the foundations of Byzantine churches and their mosaics beside them.
