Hunza Valley Travel Guide: Karakoram's Crown Jewel

Elijah Tours Team June 20, 2026 8 min read

Cradled beneath Rakaposhi and Ultar Sar in the heart of the Karakoram, Hunza Valley is Pakistan's most beloved mountain escape — a place of glacier-fed rivers, terraced orchards, and warm hospitality that stays with you long after you leave.

How to get to Hunza

The classic route is the Karakoram Highway (KKH) from Islamabad through Naran, Chilas, and Gilgit — a spectacular two-day drive past the Nanga Parbat viewpoints and the Gilgit river gorges.

If you're short on time, fly Islamabad to Gilgit (weather permitting) and continue by road to Karimabad in around 2.5 hours. Our guided trips handle transport, permits, and stops end to end.

The best time to visit

Spring (late March–April) brings the famous cherry and apricot blossoms, while summer (May–September) offers clear skies and open high passes like Khunjerab.

Autumn (October–November) turns the valley gold and crimson — arguably the most photogenic season of all.

Top things to do

Watch sunrise over Rakaposhi from Duiker (Eagle's Nest), explore the 900-year-old Baltit and Altit forts, and cross the turquoise Attabad Lake by boat.

Push north to the Khunjerab Pass on the China border — the highest paved border crossing in the world at 4,693m.

Where to stay

Karimabad is the ideal base, with heritage guesthouses and hotels offering direct Rakaposhi views. For a quieter stay, Gulmit and Passu in Upper Hunza sit beside dramatic cathedral peaks.

Plan your Hunza trip

Hunza pairs beautifully with Skardu on a longer northern loop. Our 8-day Hunza & Skardu tour combines both regions with hotels, transport, and an English/Urdu-speaking guide.
